Zusammenfassung:Various legends and tales are associated with many monuments of archaeology, in particular with hill-forts and barrows. Thanks to the local population, a number of fortified settlements came into the field of sight of professional archaeologists. The first excavations were carried out by D.Ya. Samokvasov at the settlements near the village of Yukhnove in Novhorod-Siverskyi district in 1873 and 1876. As a result, a material was obtained allowing to date them to the Early Iron Age.Separate attention should be paid to the works by S.A. Hattsuk who in 1907 surveyed the monuments in the Desna River middle region, made plans of them, laid exploratory trenches and conducted limited excavations. The research was carried out at a high professional level. The research report of 1907 is not only of historiographic, but also of scientific interest.
