fulltext 228 Dear participants, I salute you all with regard on the behalf of the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO. I would like to thank the Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Turkish Folklore Application and Research Center and the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with Ankara Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University UNESCO Chair of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Formal and Non- Formal Education and Intangible Cultural Heritage Association for their support. I would like to thank my dear colleague Prof. Dr. Oksana Mykytenko who is an expert at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and a Ph.D. Mariya Doğan for bringing us together. Considering the situation in Ukraine, I find it very meaningful to discuss the current situa- tion of intangible cultural heritage with you, esteemed experts. Since its founding, UNESCO works as an institution that aims to ensure peace in the world and to prevent the conceptualization of war in the minds of people. UNESCO estab- lishes programs focused on ensuring the sustainability of peace and within this peaceful environment aims at the creation of sustainable development, through providing prosperity and development in science that starts with education for all within education, strengthe- ning mutual dialogue within culture and finally ensuring healthy communication between people, societies and countries. Among these programs, intangible cultural heritage has become an important UNESCO program besides tangible heritage. Recently, UNESCO has added new articles to its implementing directive on how intangible cultural heritage should be safeguarded in emergencies. The war conditions in Ukraine have led to migration bringing to the emergence of abandoned villages and cities. Discussing the effects of mig- ration, displacement, the distortion and destruction of the cultural properties / elements as a result of war on the transfer of intangible cultural heritage from one generation to the another and seeking precautions and solutions are extremely humanitarian and in line with the UNESCO programs. Ukraine has adopted the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cul- tural Heritage in 2008, registered five elements to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and added two elements in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. It is the common goal for all of us to establish and support all kinds of mechanisms that will ensure the transfer of Ukraine’s rich intangible cultural heritage from one generation to another without being further disturbed, distorted or destroyed. I want to thank the Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Turkish Folklore Application and Research Center, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and other stakeholders who organized this meeting. Today, many stories, songs, and laments about the war are created, and Ukraine had to change many ritual contents and practices. The purpose of this online meeting is to learn about the personal and institutional experiences of intangible cultural heritage safeguarding in case of war and to discuss the future of cultural heritage by the esteemed Ukrainian academicians.
