The main stages of the formation and development of engineering-geological research as a part of the geological research in the system of the Earth Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, their importance and main tasks are considered. In the first stage (20-30s of XX century), the research was carried out as a geological investigation for the construction and implementation of anti-landslide measures in urban areas. In the second stage (30-40s of XX century), engineering-geological researches were conducted for substantiation of hydrotechnical and hydro-amelioration construction (the cascade of the Dnieper reservoirs, etc.). Since 1991, the object of engineering-geological research adopted the geological environment as part of the lithosphere which was influenced by human activity. The characteristic of the main thematic directions of the Department for these years is given, the projects of restoration of objects of historical and architectural heritage are considered in detail. The directions of further researches and their forming factors are offered.
