Дана характеристика особенностей промысла китов с давних исторических времен. Выделены качественно различные эпохи. Обоснован переход к промыслу китов в водах Антарктики. Указаны объемы добычи основных промысловых видов китов. Рассмотрена история создания Международной Конвенции по регулированию промысла и разработке единых Правил добычи китов.
