Description
Pavlo Biletskyi-Nosenko was born on 27 August 1774 in the city of Pryluky in Chernigiv
Region. His noble family had Kozaks and Kozak sergeants in its past. Pavlo could hardly
remember his father who was often away from home in military campaigns and was killed in
a battle against the Turks. His mother Hanna Maksymivna was a niece of Georgii Konyskyi,
a prominent cultural figure of that time. The mother was very strict with children and as she
herself was doing all housework, she had no time to take proper care of the children.
Having successfully graduated from the Shliachta (noblemen) infantry cadet corps,
 P. Biletskyi-Nosenko joined Katerynynskyi regiment of chasseurs to serve in the rank of
lieutenant. Later he was promoted to the rank of staff-captain. His brilliant military career
was stopped by Pavlo’s mother. She decided to marry her son to a daughter of a nobility leader
 in the town of Konotop.
So, P. Biletskyi-Nosenko settled down in the village of Lapyntsi near Pryluky and started
extensive civil, literary, and pedagogical activity. He was well educated for his time. He spoke
several languages fluently, knew national and world literature, and basics of pedagogic. His
library contained several thousands of books in Latin, French, German, Russian, and Polish
languages. He was subscribed to a big number of periodicals in various fields of knowledge.
Pavlo Biletskyi-Nosenko passed away on 11 June 1856 at the age of eighty one. He was
buried in his farmstead in the village of Lapyntsi.
