У статті висвітлюється образ українського інтелектуала ХІХ ст. Миколи Костомарова (1817–1885), 200-літній ювілей якого відзначався минулого року. Він був одним з найвизначніших учених своєї епохи, оскільки сприяв становленню багатьох напрямів української соціогуманітаристики. Значну увагу приділено активній громадсько-політичній позиції М. Костомарова, зокрема участі в Кирило-Мефодіївському братстві, українофільському рухові 60–80-х років ХІХ ст., яка висвітлюється на тлі суспільних подій та наукової творчості вченого. У образі діяча актуалізується його україноцентричність і самоідентифікація, складнощі, пов'язані з тиском влади, та бажанням відстояти свої справжні ідеали – свободу, рівність, братство всіх слов’янських народів, серед яких належне місце займає український. The article covers the image of the Ukrainian intellectual of the ХІХ cent. Mykola Kostomarov (1817–1885), whose 200-year anniversary is celebrated last year. He was one of the most prominent scientists of his era, as he contributed to the formation of many areas of Ukrainian sociohumanitarism. Much attention is paid to M. Kostomarov's active sociopolitical position, in particular participation in the Cyril-Methodius Brotherhood, the Ukrainophile movement of the 1860's and 1880's of the nineteenth century, which is highlighted against the backdrop of social events and scientific creativity of the scientist. In his image, the figure is updated with his Ukrainian-centricity and self-identification, the difficulties associated with the pressure of the authorities and the desire to defend their true ideals – freedom, equality, brotherhood of all Slavic peoples, among which the Ukrainian place takes its proper place.
