Yeletskyi monastery in Chernihiv was founded in the second half of the 11th century. It is
located to the west of Dytynets. During the time of Kyivan Rus, the Uspenskyi Cathedral was
built on its territory. The temple is now preserved. During the Hetmans days, several buildings
(a bell tower, cells, a wall, etc.) were built in the monastery, which are now used as intended.
At the time of the investigated period (the second half of the 18th – the beginning of the 19th
century), the monastery was a friary. Nowadays it is an active convent. The architectural
ensemble of the monastery is now part of the city’s historical environment.
Some issues of everyday life of the Yeletskyi monastery in the second half of the 18th – at
the beginning of the 19th century are described in the article. This problem is urgent, because,
taking into account the development of historical science and changes in the study of its
approaches, the issues of everyday life of monasteries, in particular, Yeletskyi in Chernihiv,
became actual as a local manifestation of general-historical tendencies.
Yeletskyi monastery was an educational center, and its priests were highly educated people.
The paper also covers issues of the quantitative composition of the monks, their transfer from
other monasteries to Yeletskyi. The problems of escapes of novices and monks from this monastery
are considered too. Issues of misunderstanding between priests in certain situations
are revealed. The economic component of monastic life is analyzed. It is emphasized on the
important participation of the archbishop and the spiritual dicastery in solving the everyday
affairs of the monastery.
It is concluded that it was from such separate episodes of the life of the Yeletskyi monastery
that his everyday life was formed. It was emphasized that monastic everyday life was clearly
regulated by certain rules. Such scientific investigation is of particular value as it fills certain
gaps in the development of regional research
