У статті автор досліджує проблему комплексного етнографічного вивчення північної Житомирщини вітчизняною наукою від середини ХІХ ст. до сьогодні. Означена територія постійно приваблює до себе багатьох дослідників, оскільки саме житомирське Полісся у різних галузях народної культури тривалий час зберігало найдавніші традиції та знання. Розглядаючи у цьому зв'язку здобутки і перспективи, автор накреслює можливі шляхи вирішення нерозв'язаних на сьогодні питань. В статье автор исследует проблему комплексного этнографического изучения Северной Житомирщины отечественной наукой с середины XIX в. и до сегодняшнего времени. In the article the issue of comprehensive ethnographic study by domestic science of Northern Zhytomyr region is examined from the middle of the nineteenth century till today. Described area constantly attracts many researchers, since Zhytomyr Polissya in various fields of folk culture for a long time has been keeping the ancient traditions and knowledge. Ethnographic study of middle Polissya went a long way — from a variety of field data accumulation, began in the mid-nineteenth century to complex ethno-linguistic and ethnological studies that were published mainly in the second half of the twentieth century. Considering in this regard the achievements and prospects, the author outlines possible solutions to unresolved issues today. Based on the findings of leading edge research, the author discovers the most important and most original Zhytomyr Polissya fields of traditional life. Attention has been focused on the identification of local features and characteristics in the field of «cultural complex life support».
