Description
The paper offers a detailed examination of the historical literary texts by Y. Kosach “Rubicon of
Khmelnytskyi”, “Day of Anger”, “Mistress of Pontis”, “Devil Rock” etc. The historical novels have been
interpreted with emphasis on their themes, images, genre and stylistic modifications. As the novels
written by Y. Kosach in 1960–1980 haven’t been studied yet, the main attention is paid to them.
The researcher observes the change of genre and composition features in the works by Y. Kosach
from the 1960s to 1980s. It was a period of active compositional search of the writer who used such
techniques as psychological portrait of the hero, the combination of historical background with fictional
episodes. The paper investigates alternative versions of historical events, used by the writer, the ways
of reproducing the epoch of the 17th–18th centuries at different levels: ideological, cultural, political.
 Y. Kosach wrote his intellectual prose for a thoughtful educated reader. Numerous refined dialogues
in the novel remind the works of such ‘Executed Renaissance’ authors as V. Pidmogylnyi, M. Ivchenko.
The analysis of the compositional features of structure, the images, the stylistic and artistic tasks of
the author allows us to speak about such varieties of historical novels by Y. Kosach, as historical
adventure, historical-philosophical, historical-psychological and historical-social novel. The stylistics of
 Y. Kosach’s works is synthetic and extremely diverse: it is a combination of impressionistic, expressionist
and baroque elements in the individual style of the writer.
In general, the author of the novels “Mistress of Pontis” and “Devil Rock” was guided by the
traditions of European prose, in particular the French one. The Kosach’s knowledge of psychology
and philosophy played the basic role in writing historical novels. Undoubtedly, these works may be
considered as a true achievement of the modern intellectual prose, written by the Ukrainian diaspora
of the 2nd half of the 20th century.
