Облік L. weddellii проводили на островах архіпелагу маршрутним методом з оглядом місць ймовірного знаходження тюленів. Переходи до островів, у залежності від льодової ситуації, погодних умов, здійснювали по морському льоду або з використанням човна. Ідентифікацію L. weddellii проводили згідно загальноприйнятої методики.
