У статті, на прикладі козацької фортеці у Старих Санжарах Полтавського полку, розглядаються сотенні містечка Гетьманщини як пам'ятки історії та культури. Спираючись на особливість сотенних містечок у збереженості з усіх їх складових лише фортець, увага приділяється аналізу як аспектам історико-культурного критерію пам'ятки, так і натурно-археологічним дослідженням Старосанжарської фортеці. Показано процес переосмислення функції козацьких фортець від утилітарної до ціннісної. The article deals with the squadron towns of Hetmanate as historical and cultural monuments by the example of the town StariSanzhary of Poltava regiment. Historical and cultural criteria of protection object squadron towns were analyzed on the basis of archival documents and research materials of M. Arandarenko, M. Hrushevsky, O. Lazarevsky, V. Moklyak, M. Slabchenko and other. The process of rethinking the function of Cossack fortresses from the utilitarian to the axiological is showed on the historiographical materials of the first half of the nineteenth century. From all component parts of squadron towns only fortresses are preserved. Relying on this special attention is focused on archaeological research of fortifications. Analysis of the results of archaeological research in Novi Sanzhary conducted by V. Lyaskoronsky, M. Makarenko, M. M.Stan and other, as well as their comparison with examination of the fortress by the author suggests that the fortress is in good condition by contrast to majority of the squadron towns of the Poltava regiment. The trend towards the destruction of the Cossack fortresses household and extortionate activities underscores the value of fortifications in squadron town in StariSanzhary. The article proposes an urgent formulation of residues a fortress in StariSanzhary as a historical and cultural monument and its registration in the organs of protection. Results of the study will be used in preparation of the registration documentation. В статье, на примере местечка Старые Санжары в Полтавском полку, рассматриваются сотенные городки Гетманщины как памятники истории и культуры. Опираясь на особенность сотенных городков Гетманщины в сохранности из всех их составляющих только крепостей, внимание уделяется как историко-культурному критерию памятника, так и натурно-археологическим исследованиям крепости в Старых Санжарах. Показан процесс переосмысления функции казацких крепостей от утилитарной к ценностной.
