У статті розглядається історичний контекст поняття «рідна мова». Акцентується увага на важливості цього поняття, як смислової домінанти і домінанти духовної. Представлені погляди та думки знакових постатей української культури про рідну мову, рідне слово, про входження через мову в суспільство, в якому живеш, в його культуру. Розглянуто погляди на проблему рідної мови українських вчених Івана Огієнка, Михайла Грушевського, Івана Франка, Костянтина Ушинського та ін. The articledeals with the historical context of the concept of «native languge». The attention was paid to the importance of this concept, as industrial nominees and nominees of the spiritual.
