АНОТАЦІЇ SUMMARY

ЩЕ РАЗ ПРО ЗАГАДКУ ЗАГИБЕЛІ РО-
МАНА МСТИСЛАВОВИЧА
Проаналізовано всі збережені джерела
та версії істориків стосовно причин остан-
нього походу першого галицько-волинського
князя Романа Мстиславовича та його заги-
белі у 1205 р. Автор обстоює версію походу
до Саксонії на підтримку свояка – німець-
кого короля Філіпа Гогенштауфена у його бо-
ротьбі з Оттоном IV Вельфом і випадкової
загибелі.

УЧАСТЬ КНЯЗЯ ДАНИЛА РОМАНО-
ВИЧА В ІНТРОНІЗАЦІЇ УГОРСЬКОГО КО-
РОЛЯ БЕЛИ IV
Розглянуто участь волинського князя
Данила Романовича в урочистій церемо-
нії інтронізації угорського короля Бели IV
1235 р. Повідомлення джерел, на які опи-
рається цей факт, правдиві. Головну увагу
приділено символічному змістові ведення
коня. Дехто з дослідників тлумачить цей
крок як добровільний вияв васальної підле-
глості старшого Романовича новому монар-
ху з династії Арпадів. Ці гіпотези постав-
лено під сумнів, адже їх доказова база небез-
доганна. Водночас проаналізовано обов’язок
конюшого (Officium stratoris), поширеного
у середньовічній Західній Європі. Зроблено
висновок про надання почестей Белі IV, але
не визнання його сюзеренітету. Цей жест
забезпечував поле для політичного маневру
в ході подальшої боротьби за Галицьку зем-
лю.

YET ONE THE ABOUT RIDDLE OF
DEATH OF ROMAN MSTYSLAVOVYCH
In the article all sources which was saved,
and versians of historias, are once again analysed
in relation to reasons of the last hike of the fi rst
Galych-Volhynia prince Roman Mstyslavovych
and his death in 1205. An author adheres to the
version of hike of Roman to Saksoni in support
the brother-in-law of German king Philip Go-
genshtaufen in his fi ght from ON on IV Welf and
accidental of death.

THE PARTICIPATION OF DANYLO RO-
MANOVYCH IN THE ENTHRONEMENT CERE-
MONY OF THE HUNGARIAN KING BELA IV
The investigation deals with the problem of
the participation of volhynian duke Danylo in the
enthronement ceremony of the Hungarian king
Bela IV in 1235. It is shown that the testimonies
of historical sources about this fact are veridical.
In the submiN ed article the main aN ention is paid
to the symbolic meaning of the leading a horse.
Some researchers interpreted the move as a vol-
untary expression of allegiance subordination of
older Romanovych to new monarch of the Árpád
dynasty. These hypotheses are questioned, be-
cause their arguments are incomplete. At the same
time it is analyzed the content of the widespread
in medieval Western Europe groom service (Offi -
cium stratoris). It is concluded that this motion
was granting the honors of Bela IV, but it wasn’t
the recognition of his suzerainity. The gesture
provided the framework for political maneuver in
the further struggle for the Galician land.

The complex of information about diff erent
aspects of the building tradition of the Chоłm

холмського періоду біографії короля Данила
Романовича (1201–1264) – літописні пере-
кази, матеріали археологічних досліджень,
широкий контекст традиції. На підставі
проведеного систематичного дослідження
холмське будівництво короля Данила Рома-
новича показано як одна з важливих сторін
історичного процесу, яка відобразила ширші
тенденції тодішньої дійсності.

РЕЛІГІЙНІСТЬ КОРОЛЯ ДАНИЛА
Здивування викликає той факт, що,
попри існування досить обширної літе-
ратури, присвяченої різним аспектам ді-
яльності Данила Романовича, дослідники
не звернули уваги на проблему релігійності
цього визначного володаря.
Очевидно, насамперед стан збереження
джерел не дає змоги висловлюватися про віру
князя і короля Русі. Можна, однак, віднайти
досить немало інформації про його релігій-
ність у широкому культурному і суспіль-
ному контексті, а насамперед того, кого з
небожителів виділяв особливим шануван-
ням і в який спосіб це висловлював.
Аналіз джерельних переказів, насамперед
Галицько-Волинського літопису, вказує, що
Данило, коли йдеться про форми шанування,
не виділявся серед інших сучасних Рюрикови-
чів, причому привертає увагу імпонуюча фун-
даторська діяльність, пов’язана насамперед з
розбудовою нової резиденції/столиці. З іншого
боку, його відзначав якнайвиразніше праг-
матичний стосунок до релігії, на що могло
мати вплив виховання як у традиції Східної,
так і Західної Церкви. Данило міг, зокрема, в
спосіб іноді навіть просто брутальний дома-
гатися прерогативи влади щодо духовенства.
Дивує також факт, що в його некролозі
немає рис, пов’язаних з наголошенням релі-
гійності, що, навпаки, досить активно наго-
лошено в некролозі Василька Романовича та
апології Володимира Васильковича. На нашу
думку, це досить вимовне і вказує, що в очах
оточення Данило не належав до володарів
особливо релігійних.

period of the biography of the King Danylo Ro-
manovych (1201–1264) – chronicle narration,
materials of archaeological researches, the wide
context of tradition is analyzed. On the basis
of the conducted a systematic study the Chоłm
building of the King Danylo Romanovych is
shown as one of the important part of the his-
torical process which refl ected broader trends of
reality of that time.

THE KING DANIEL’S RELIGIOSITY
Despite the existence of the vast litera-
ture devoted to this outstanding Rus ruler, the
question of his religion was never raised as a
separate issue. The writings dealing with the
elder Romanovich approach to religious mat-
ters focused on such issues as relations with
the papacy, and therefore automatically – the
case of “union” and coronation of the king, the
organization of the Orthodox Halych-Volyn
Rus or the ruler relationships with the Patri-
arch Kirill. These are probably the main topics
of interest to resear chers, but of course we can
also fi nd some other.
Our study showed that Daniel was char-
acterized by certain openness and fl exibility
in relation to religious institutions and their
people. He did not have any missionary zeal in
relations with the heathens. However, the elder
Romanovich in a blunt manner enforced the
prerogatives of the princely rule in relation to
the clergy.
His piety was very practical. For Daniel
and his close ones God and the saints performed
the roles of carers and helpers.
Apart for the realm of rituals the Rus
prince and king’s approach to the duties of a
Christian was characterized by foundational
activities, which – as we know – were very im-
pressive.
Yet, quite clearly, Daniel, despite the fact
that he was held in great esteem by his contem-
poraries, could not be regarded as a religious
man, which was eloquently expressed in the
form of the posthumous apology.

ХОЛМСЬКИЙ ПАМ’ЯТНИК ПЕРЕМО-
ГИ ПОБЛИЗУ ЯРОСЛАВА 1245 РОКУ
Розглянуто літописне повідомлення
1259 р. про холмський стовп з орлом. На
підставі текстологічних вказівок про-
аналізовано типологічні, морфологічні та
композиційні характеристики холмсько-
го стовпа та їхні історичні аналоги. Мо-
нумент потрактовано пам’ятником у
вигляді кам’яної колони з базою та чоти-
риликою капітеллю, увінчаним фігурою
орла, встановленим на міському поприщі,
призначеному для проведення лицарських
турнірів. Семантичне навантаження ком-
позиції холмського монумента з орлом від-
читується у трьох знаменнях Ярославської
битви 1245 р. Викладені дають підстави
аби вважати, що холмський монумент з
орлом споруджено в пам’ять про цю славет-
ну перемогу Романовичів.

“ПОДВІЙНА” КОРОНАЦІЯ ДАНИЛА
РОМАНОВИЧА: ЗАГАДКА ЛЕГЕНДИ ЧИ
РЕАЛЬНИЙ ФАКТ
Проаналізовано джерела про коро-
націю Данила Романовича у 1253 р. і ви-
світлення цієї події у викладі хроністів
ранньомодерного часу. Встановлено, що ін-
формація Галицько-Волинського літопису
повністю відповідає повідомленню Ніколо
де Кальві, сповідника папи Інокентія ІV,
та польського джерела з кола краківського
єпископа Яна Прандоти, яке було у роз-
порядженні хроніста Яна Длуґоша. Саме
Я. Длуґош свідомо сфальшував інформацію
про коронацію, закресливши первинний ва-
ріант, взятий з цього джерела, і вставивши
на полях власну конструкцію під 1246 р.
Мацєй Меховіта навів обидва фрагменти,
що привело до пізніших версій з домінан-
тою длуґошівської версії 1246 р.
Сучасні історики, не зауважуючи до-
сліджень з цієї проблеми В. Семкович-За-
рембіни та Д. Домбровського, продовжу-
ють шукати джерел цих версій. А про-
блема “подвійної” коронації у 1253 р., про
яку писав Я. Длуґош, і надалі залишається

KHOLM MONUMENT TO THE VICTORY
IN THE BATTLE AT JAROSLAW IN 1245
There have been considered in the article
the chronicle message of 1259 about pillar with
an eagle, built near the town Kholm. Based on
the analysis of textual instructions, author in-
vestigated typological, morphological and com-
positional characteristics of this monument and
its historical counterparts. The monument in-
terprete das stone column with base and fourfa-
ces capital, crowned with the fi gure of an eagle.
This column was set on the city fi eld, intended
for knightlyt ournaments. The semantic content
of the composition of the Kholm monument with
an eagle is encoded in three signs, mentioned in
the article of the Galician-Volynian Chronicl eth
at describes baN le at Yaroslavin 1245. The above
considerations givere as ontobelieveth at Kholm
monument with an eagle was erected in memory
of this glorious victory.

“DOUBLE” KORONATION OF DANYLO
ROMANOWYCZ: A RIDDLE OF LEGEND OR
REAL FACT
The article is dedicated to analysis of sour-
ces about coronation of Danylo Romanowych
in 1253 and also to the descriptions of this oc-
currence by early modern chroniclers/ It’s know
that the information about Danylo’s coronation
in Galician-Volhynian Chronicle coincides with
records of Nicolo Calvi, the соnfessor of Pope In-
nocent IV and notations of anonymous author
who was the part of Jan Prandota’s entourage.
All there sources were available for Jan Dlugosz.
So it was Jan Dlugosz, who deliberately falsifi ed
information about coronation, wheb he crossed
out primary version from sources and inser-
ted his own variant in the page’s margins and
put the date 1246. Another chronicler Maciej
Miechowita had included two versions about
Danylo’s coronation in his work, which led to
controversy in early modern chronicles, where
however Dlugosz’s version was dominated.
Contemporary historians, who don’t no-
tice researches of V. Semkowich-Zarembin’s and
D. Dombrovsky’s, still searching for reasons of
diff erences in reports of chronicles. The issue

КОЛИ ДАНИЛО РОМАНОВИЧ СТАВ
КОРОЛЕМ РУСІ?
Зроблено висновок, що уже в 1230-х ро-
ках у західноєвропейських актових джерелах
за Данилом Романовичем закріпився титул
“короля Русі”, титул за ним визнавали як
римський папа, так і німецький імператор.
Тим обидві верховні інституції західно-хрис-
тиянського світу, що за традицією володіли
правом надання королівського титулу світ-
ським правителям, не тільки визнавали та-
кий за князем Галицько-Волинської Русі, а й,
безсумнівно, виділяли його серед правителів
окремих руських земель і міст як короля усі-
єї Русі. Такий статус у Західній Європі давні-
ше визнавався тільки за великими київськи-
ми князями Володимиром Святим, Яросла-
вом Мудрим і їх найближчими нащадками.

СЕРЕДНЬОВІЧЧЯ
Запропоновано порівняльний аналіз доль
двох чільних постатей історії Східної Євро-
пи XIII ст. – князя Олександра Ярославовича
(Невського) і короля Данила Романовича, а
також уявлень сучасників про їх посмертну
долю і святість. Дослідження засноване на
базових категоріях середньовічної культури,
що забезпечує від модернізації історії. Запро-
поновано висновок про штучність проти-
ставлення цих володарів у сучасній свідомос-
ті. У житті князів простежуються числен-
ні паралелі, які пояснюють не літературні
топоси, а умови середньовічного життя і
менталітету. Існуючі відмінності стосу-
ються, здебільшого, церковної політики та
релігійної культури й продиктовані відмін-
ним політико-географічним розташуванням
їх князівств на карті Європи. Пропонується

WHEN DANIEL ROMANOVICH BE-
CAME “KING OF RUS’”?
The paper concludes that in the 1230s in
Western sources for Daniel Romanovich was
fi xed the title of “King of Russia”. It is impor-
tant to note that the title has been recognized
as the Pope and the German Emperor. Thus,
both the supreme institution of the western
Christian world traditionally possessed the
right of the royal title secular rulers, not only
recognized as such for the Prince of Gali-
cia-Volyn Rus, but undoubtedly distinguished
him among the rulers of the land and certain
Russian cities as the king of all Russia. Such
status in the old days in Western Europe con-
fessed only for the great Holy Prince Vladimir
of Kiev, Yaroslav the Wise, and their immedi-
ate descendants.

PRINCE ALEXANDR IAROSLAVOVYCH
AND KING DANYLO ROMANOVYCH AS
PEOPLE OF THE MIDDLE AGES
The article provides a comparative study
of the activity of the two key persons in the his-
tory of Eastern Europe in 13th century – Ale-
xander Jaroslavovych (Nevsky) and king Daniel
Romanovych, and the contemporary perceptions
concerning their sainthood and afterlife vene-
ration. The study is based on the categories of
the medieval culture that allows avoiding any
modernization of the history. The conclusion has
been done about the artifi cial character of oppo-
sition of the rulers in the modern mentality. In
the lives of princes many parallels can be traced,
which should be explain by similar conditions
of medieval life and mentality, not by literary
topos. The diff erences relate primarily to their
church politics and religious culture, caused
by diff erent positions of two principalities on
the political map of Europe. The article revises

Холмської єпархії та ролі єпископа Іоана у
складенні літописного образу Данила Рома-
новича. Канонізація князя Олександра пояс-
нюється існуванням сильного й стабільного
осередку церковної влади поряд з місцем його
поховання у Владимирі, відсутньої у Холмі,
де поховано короля Данила.

НОВИЙ ШТРИХ ДО МИСТЕЦЬКОГО
ОБРАЗУ СОБОРУ БОГОРОДИЦІ В ХОЛМІ
(ЗА ЛІТОПИСНИМ ПЕРЕКАЗОМ ТА АРХЕ-
ОЛОГІЧНИМИ ДОСЛІДЖЕННЯМИ)
Запропоновано аналіз літописних та
найновіших археологічних даних, що стосу-
ються першого етапу оздоблення інтер’єру
та екстер’єру собору Богородиці ХІІІ ст. у
Холмі. На основі проведених міждисциплінар-
них досліджень зроблено спробу гіпотетично
відтворити мистецький образ сакральної
споруди. Завдяки проведеним хіміко-техно-
логічним дослідженням, описано технологію
створення фресок, застосовану при виконанні
елементів малярського оздоблення собору.

НЕКОРОНОВАНІ І КОРОНОВАНІ КО-
РОЛІ ПІВДЕННО-ЗАХІДНОЇ РУСІ
Розглянуто питання про виникнення
інституту королівської влади в Західній
Європі. Вивчається проблема застосування
титулу король відносно володарів Східної Єв-
ропи. Показано в контексті вивчення коро-
лівської титулатури процес включення Га-
лицької землі до складу Королівства Польща.

the initial period of the history of the diocese of
Chełm and the role of Bishop John in the forma-
tion of the image of the King Daniel in the Gali-
cian-Volhynian Chronicle. The canonization of
the Prince Alexander should be explained by the
existence of a well established church organi-
zation near his shrine in Vladimir, which was
absent in Chełm where Daniel had been buried.

THE PRINCELY CATHEDRAL OF OUR
LADY IN KHOLM – THE ARTISTIC IMAGE AC-
CORDING (TO THE CHRONICLE AND THE RE-
SULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCHES)
The article presents an analysis of the
chronicles and archaeological data relating to
the fi rst phase of interior and exterior decora-
tion of the XIII century princely Cathedral of
Our Lady in Kholm. On the basis of interdis-
ciplinary study the artistic image of a religious
building are hypothetically recreated. Also,
due to conducted chemical and technological
researches, frescoes creating technology, used
in the painting decoration of the cathedral, was
described.

MONARCHS OF THE SOUTH-WEST RUS’
The paper deals with the question of the
orig in of the institute of royal power in the Wes-
tern Europe. We study the problem of the title
“king” in relation to the rulers of the Eastern
Europe. The process of incorporating of Galician
land to the Kingdom of Poland is shown in the
context of the study about the royal titulature.

ЛИСА ГОРА НА ГОЛИХ ГОРАХ (ПРИ-
ЧИНОК ДО ТОПОНІМІЧНОГО ЛАНДШАФ-
ТУ ГАЛИЦЬКО-ВОЛИНСЬКОГО ПОГРА-
НИЧЧЯ В ДОБУ РОМАНОВИЧІВ)
Розглянуто локалізацію Лисої гори, яка
опинилася в полі зору літописця у зв’язку
з одним епізодом боротьби за “галицьку
спадщину” між Романовичами та їх супро-
тивниками, зокрема князем Мстиславом
Удатним у 1224/1225 р. Згідно з усталеною
історіографічною традицією, пошуки Лисої
гори зосередилися поблизу містечка Тарного-
ра на річці Вепр або ж провадили до ототож-
нення цього ороніму з Лисогірським пасмом
Свєнтокшижських гір у Малопольщі. При-
пускаємо, натомість, що цей літописний
пункт варто ототожнити з однойменною
вершиною Гологірського горбогірного пас-
ма, поблизу с. Червоне Золочівського р-ну
Львівської обл. Таку гіпотезу підтверджує
територіальне тло конфлікту, зокрема не-
велика віддаль від Гологір до “Рожного поля”,
топоніміка, географічні відомості та архе-
ологічні матеріали зі значної концентрації
городищ княжої доби (Мостище, Підгороди-
ще, Унів, Гологори) у цьому регіоні.

БІБЛІЯ У ГАЛИЦЬКО-ВОЛИНСЬКОМУ
ЛІТОПИСІ
Біблійні цитати у Галицько-Волин-
ському літописі (ГВЛ) ніколи система-
тично не вивчалися, у численних виданнях
цього зводу вони, як правило, не відзначені.
У статті досліджуються версії залучених
галицьким та волинським книжниками
біблійних книг, а також особливості відси-
лань до Біблії у цьому цінному давньрусь-
кому джерелі та способи їх компонування з
деякими іншими книжними джерелами.

THE “BALD MOUNTAIN” ON “BARE
MOUNTAINS” (TO THE ISSUE OF GALI-
CIAN-VOLYN BORDERLAND TOPONYMIC
LANDSCAPE IN ROMANOVYCHI EPOCH)
The paper deals with consideration of “Bald
Mountain” localization, which appeared in
chronicler sight in connection with one episode
of the struggle for “Galician heritage” between
Romanovychi and their opponents, including
Prince Mstyslav Udatny in 1224/1225. Accor-
ding to the established historiographical tradi-
tion, searches of “Bald Mountain” focused on ter-
ritory near the town Tarnohora on the river Vepr
or they have led to identifi cation of this oronym
with the “Bare Mountain” strand of “Holy Cross
Mountains” in Lesser Poland. Instead of it we as-
sume that this chronicle paragraph should be in-
terpreted with the same top of “Bare Mountains”
strand near the village Chervone in Zolochiv dis-
trict, Lviv region. This hypothesis is supported
territorial background of that confl ict, including
insignifi cant distance from “Bare Mountains” to
“Rozhne pole”, toponymy, geographical data and
archaeological materials, namely a large concen-
tration of Middle Ages hillforts (Mostysche, Pid-
horodysche, Univ, Holohory) in the region.

THE BIBLE IN THE GALICIA-VOLHYNI-
AN CHRONICLE
The Galicia-Volhynian Chronicle’s biblical
quotations and allusions never have been studied
systematically. RegreN ably, numerous editions
of this chronicle have not marked it’s citations
from the Bible. The present article deals with the
versions of the biblical books had drawn to the
chronicle by the Galician and Volhynia scribes,
and also surveys parameters of referen ces and
layout with some other bookish sources in this
valuable Old Russian text.

ОСЕРЕДКІВ ГАЛИЦЬКО-ВОЛИНСЬКОЇ
ДЕРЖАВИ В ХІІІ – ПЕРШІЙ ПОЛОВИНІ
XIV СТОЛІТТЯ
У статті досліджено розвиток мере-
жі міських осередків Галицько-Волинської
держави упродовж ХІІІ – першої половини
XIV ст. Встановлено, що на її терені у вка-
заний час функціонував 61 міський осеред-
ок (наведена лічба враховує також ті, що
перестали існувати в середині ХІІІ ст.).
На початку ж ХІІІ ст. функціонувало 40
таких осередків. Після монгольської нава-
ли – упродовж другої половини ХІІІ – першої
половини XIV ст. на терені Галицько-Во-
линської держави функціонувало 49 місь-
ких осередків.

І БЛИЖНІХ”: ДАТУВАННЯ ПРОТОГРАФУ
Аналізується збережена у пізніших
копіях рідкісна і все ще немало загадкова
пам’ятка східноєвропейської історіогра-
фії – “Список руських городів дальніх і
ближніх”. На підставі докладного аналізу
поодиноких реалій тексту та їх конкрет-
ного історичного контексту автор пропо-
нує й обґрунтовує висновок про походжен-
ня протографу з XIV ст., визнаючи при-
сутність у збереженому тексті пізніших
доповнень.

DEVELOPMENT OF NETWORK OF CAS-
TLE-TOWN SETTLEMENTS OF THE PRINCI-
PALITY OF GALICIA–VOLHYNIA IN THE 13TH
AND THE FIRST HALF OF THE 14TH CENTURY
In the article is exploring the development of
a network of castle-town seN lements of The Prin-
cipality of Galicia-Volhynia during the 13th and
the fi rst half of the 14th century. It is established
that it career at the specifi ed time operated 61 cas-
tle-town seN lements (shown counting also takes
into account those that have ceased to exist in the
middle of the 13th century). At the beginning of the
13th century 40 such centers were operating. After
the Mongol invasion – during the second half of
13th and the fi rst half of the 14th century on the
territory of The Principality of Galicia-Volhynia
operated 49 castle-town seN lements.

“LIST OF THE NEAR AND REMOTET
OWNS OF RUS’”: DATING OF THE PROTO-
GRAPH
There have been analyzed the “List of the
near and remotet owns of Rus’”, which was pre-
served in the later copies and remainsan enigma-
tical artifact of the Eastern European historiogra-
phy. Based on a detailed analysis of the rare realia
of the text and its specifi c historical context, the
author off ers and justifi es the conclusion about
the original dating of the protographas 14th cen-
tury, while the presence of later additions in the
preserved text is also recognized.
