Мета дослідження. На основі аналізу широкого кола архівних джерел та опублікованих
 матеріалів простежити заснування, розвиток і занепад у XVIII – першій половині ХІХ ст. скиту Чорний Вир на Афоні, розкрити його значення у житті українського чернецтва Святої Гори, зв’язки з
 козацтвом, виявити роль старшини у ктиторській підтримці обителі та святогірських ченців-співвітчизників. Методологічні засади дослідження ґрунтуються на принципах історизму, наукової об’єктивності, системності, діалектичному підході до історичних явищ. Відповідно до поставленої мети й завдань було використано сукупність загальнонаукових, міждисциплінарних, спеціальних
 методів дослідження. Наукова новизна. Використано маловідомі архівні джерела, на основі яких
 комплексно досліджено процес заснування й діяльності українського скиту на Афоні у XVIII – першій половині ХІХ ст. Шляхом аналізу архівних та опублікованих матеріалів виявлено малознані
 аспекти розвитку й діяльності цього українського осередку, його зв’язки з чернецтвом і козацтвом
 в Україні. Наголошено, що святогірський «козацький» скит є важливим елементом спадщини
 українського чернецтва на Афоні, прямим свідченням тісних духовно-культурних зв’язків Січі з
 центром православного чернецтва й ісихазму. Зазначено, що ця пам’ятка присутності запорожців
 на Святій Горі має духовно-культурну та науково-історичну цінність, потребує подальших досліджень і відновлення. The aim of the study. On the basis of the analysis of a wide range of archival sources and
 published materials, to investigate the foundation, development and decline of the Ukrainian spiritual
 and cultural center – Black Whirlpool skete (Mavros Viros) in the 18th – first half of the 19th century at
 the World Orthodox Monastic Center in Athos. to reveal its role in the life of Ukrainian monasticism in
 Athos and relations with Ukrainian Cossacks, to identify the role of Ukrainian Cossack officers in the
 donor’s support of the Ukrainian skete Black Whirlpool and monks on Mount Athos. The methodological
 foundations of the study are based on the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity and systematic,
 dialectical approach to historical phenomena. In accordance with the set goals and objectives, a set
 of general scientific, interdisciplinary and special research methods was used. The scientific novelty
 is that the article thoroughly investigates the process of foundation and activity of the Ukrainian skete
 Black Whirlpool on Mount Athos in the 18th – first half of the 19th century. Based on the analysis of
 archival sources and published materials, the little-studied aspects of the development and activity
 of this Ukrainian monastic unit in Athos, its connection with Ukrainian monasticism and the Cossacks
 in Ukraine, have been identified. It is emphasized that this Athos Cossack monastery is an important
 component of the history, spiritual culture, tradition and heritage of Ukrainian monasticism in Athos, a
 direct testimony to the close spiritual and cultural ties of Sich with the center of Orthodox monasticism
 and hesychasm in Athos. It is stated that this monument of the presence of the Cossacks at Athos has
 spiritual, cultural and scientific-historical value, needs further research and restoration.
