У статті висвітлено увагу І. Франка до питання про зв’язок мови i мислення, духовного світу індивіда і нації загалом. Охарактеризовано основні позиції статті «Двоязичність i дволичність», у якій доведено, що духовний розвиток кожної людини i нації загалом закономірно пов’язаний з розвитком рідної мови, а відступ від рідної мови є потужним чинником психологічної деструкції і людини, і суспільства; засуджено подвійні моральні стандарти тогочасних діячів, які, вважаючи себе українськими патріотами, залишалися малоросами. Руйнівний вплив мовного відступництва («язикового роздвоєння») на свідомість тогочасного галицького суспільства проілюстровано на прикладах життя і творчості Івана Наумовича та Івана Гушалевича. The article highlights I. Franko’s attention to the issue of the relation between language and thinking, the spiritual world of the individual and the nation as a whole. The main positions of the article «Bilingualism and Duality» are described, in which it is proved that the spiritual development of every person and nation in general is naturally associated with the development of the native language, and the retreat from the native language is a powerful factor in the psychological destruction of both man and society; Convicted double moral standards of those who, at the time, considered themselves Ukrainian patriots, remained Little Russians. The devastating effect of linguistic apostasy («language split») on the consciousness of the then Galician society is illustrated on examples of life and work of Ivan Naumovych and Ivan Gushalevych.
