Стаття присвячена висвітленню громадської та професійної
 діяльності І. Л. Шрага, спрямованої на захист української мови
 в умовах колоніального становища та заборон. Як адвокат,
 І. Л. Шраг домагався скасування заборон на вживання української
 мови в різних сферах суспільного життя й відстоював права
 українців на навчання рідною мовою, видання українськомовних
 підручників, запровадження народних бібліотек. Ілля Шраг став
 одним із фундаторів громадського руху в Чернігові і засновником
 «Просвіти», яка давала можливість демократичній інтелігенції
 легально працювати на користь свого народу. The article discusses Illia Shrag ‘s public and human rights activities
 aimed at protecting the Ukrainian language under colonial oppression
 and prohibitions. Illia Shrag belongs to the most famous figures of the
 national liberation movement of the late nineteenth – early twentieth
 centuries. As lawyer Illia Shrag argued over the need to lift the
 prohibitions on the functioning of the Ukrainian language in various
 spheres of public life and defended the rights of the Ukrainians to teach
 Ukrainian language in elementary school, as well as publication of
 Ukrainian textbooks and the introduction of libraries for the people. Illia
 Shrag became one of the founders of the civil movement in Chernihiv and
 the founder of Prosvita, which enabled the democratic intelligentsia to
 legally work in favor of their people.
