у контексті поховального ритуалу наразі не став предметом спеціального розгляду. Аналіз польового фактографічного матеріалу дав
можливість розкрити їх знакові властивості, визначити семіотичний статус, дотичність до духовної культури населення краю. «Гостинці» тісно пов’язані з ідеєю посмертного короткочасного обслуговування «душі». Спершу вони розміщувалися на периферії освоєного
людиною простору – вікні, далі разом із жалобною ходою переміщалися на кладовище, де залишалися на могилі (роздавалися присутнім, передусім – дітям). Це яскраво виражений інструмент для поєднання двох світів, за допомогою якого відкривався або блокувався
зв’язок між «своїм» і «чужим» світами.
The article is devoted to the consideration of ritual of using the food
«present» (so called «hostyntsi») which is locally recorded in the Chernihiv-
Siverskyi region. «Hostyntsi» is a generalized name for a type of food
(for example, candy), but most often it is an unstable set of dishes, among
which most frequently are mentioned candies, cookies (roasts), gingerbread,
rarely – apples. Sometimes this term referred to a wider range of products,
in particular bread, a bottle of vodka (or wine), sometimes honey was added
to them. The ritual aspect of «hostyntsi» existence in the context of the
funeral ritual has not yet been the subject of a special consideration. The
main source of information for the article were the author’s fieldwork materials
collected in the northern districts of Chernihiv region during historical
and ethnographic expeditions held in 2017–2019, conducted by
the State Research Center for Protection of Cultural Heritage from Technological
Disasters. Analysis of fieldwork materials made it possible to reveal
the symbolic properties of the «Hostyntsi», to determine their semiotic
status. They are closely connected with the idea of short-term posthumous
life of the «soul». Firstly «hostyntsi» were located on the periphery of the
space mastered by a man – windows, then could be placed in the coffin of
the dead as a «transfer» to the other world – especially relatives of those
who died within the last 40 days, along with a mourning procession to the
cemetery in a knot in the hands of a widow. They began to be distributed
at the moment when the grave was «blocked» by the priest and the diggers
covered it with earth; «Hostyntsi» were left on the grave or distributed
to those present, in the first place to children. As a kind of gift, they were
taken from the funeral table and brought home to be given to the children
as a remedy from a fear. It is a distinct tool for reconciling the two worlds
as a means to open the connection between the «own» and the «other»
worlds and, at the same time, to organize «this» world.
