У статті розглядається походження слова невід, яке не має загальноприйнятої, надійної етимології. Автор вважає, що в праслов’янській мові первісно існували два слова на позначення рибальської сітки: *vodb «пересувна (рухома) рибальська сітка», утворене від дієслова *vesti (< *vedtei) «вести» (із заміною кореневого е на о, що характерно для архаїчних іменників), і *nevodb «непересувна (нерухома) рибальська сітка», утворене від заперечної частки *пе «не» і дієслова *vesti (< *vedtei) «вести». The article focuses on the origin of the Ukrainian невід, which lacks a reliable and generally ac-cepted etymology. The author argues that Common Slavonic originally had two words denoting fishing net: *vodb «movable fishing net» deriving from the verb *vesti (*vedtei) «to lead», with the roor e changing to o in the way typical of archaic nouns, and *nevodb «stationary fishing net» deriving from the negative particle *ne prefixed to the root of the verb *vesti (< *vedtei) «to lead».
