У статті крізь призму історичного розвитку південнослов’янського регіону розглянуто проблеми, актуальні для більшості соціолінгвістичних досліджень Південної Славії. Особливу увагу лінгвісти приділяють нормуванню, стандартизації / рестандартизації, мовній політиці та мовному плануванню, зв’язку мови та національної ідентичності. Актуальними є зв’язки соціолінгвістики регіону із соціумом, що відповідає логіці сучасної мовознавчої парадигми. Виходячи із засад сучасної європейської мовної політики, важливого значення набуває проблема накопичення мовами соціолінгвального капіталу. The author is concerned with the current research conducted hy sociolinguists in South Slavia and presents the explored issues considering the historical development of the South Slavic region. The article encompasses a wide range of problems that the scholars centre around and that are associated with the establishing of norms, standardization / restandardization, language policy and language planning, relationship between language and national identity. It is claimed that regional sociolinguistics is triggered hy social factors and this corresponds to the logic of modem linguistic paradigm. It is substantiated that the accumulation of sociolingual capital gains importance considering the fundamental principles of European language policy.
