Description
Summary:A description is given of a new species of vole of the genus Dolomys (Pliomys) from the Upper Pliocene—Villafranchian deposits of the South of the Ukraine. D. ucrainicus sp. n. is a vole of medium size having a structure of the grinding surface of M1 similar to that of D. lenki Heller. The salient angle of the labial row of M3 is more developed, and the posterior lingual angle is less developed than in D. lenki. Remains of this species within the western Black Sea area of the Ukrainian SSR were discovered in the stratification of the Villafranchian stage, outcropping along the left bank of the Khadzhibei liman between the populated areas of Morozovka and Cherevychny (Odessa Region) in the lower stratum of the Kuyalnik deposits of Kryzhanovka (littoral bench of Odessa Bay of the Black Sea to the east of Odessa). This species of vole is possibly present in the Kotlovina fauna (sand-gravel deposits outcropping near the village Kotlovina on the right bank of Lake Yalpukh (Odessa Region) and the Upper Poratian strata at the village Dolinskoye (Odessa Region). In the northern Azov area remains of the vole were found in deposits of the Villafranchian stage, outcropping in the littoral bench of Taganrog Bay of the Azov Sea between Bezymennoye and Shiro-kino (Donetsk Region) and in Khapry sands near the station Khapry (Rostov Region). This species is considered as a possible ancestor of the West European Early Anthropogene species from the D. lenki group and a leading form for the Villafranchian deposits of the south of Eastern Europe.
