Number 1, pp. C–E DOI:10.12958/adm1749 Fedir Mykolayovych Lyman (22.02.1941 – 13.06.2020) The famous Ukrainian mathematician and educator, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Fedir Mykolayovych Lyman passed away on June 13, 2020 after a long illness. Fedir Lyman was born on February 22, 1941 in the village Shcherby (Sumy Region) in a large country family. In 1958, after graduating from secondary school, he became a student of Makarenko Sumy State Peda- gogical Institute. After graduating from this institute (1963), the talented graduate was invited to work at the Department of Higher Mathematics of this school. Since then, his entire pedagogical life has been connected with his alma mater. In October 1965, Fedir Lyman became a Ph.D. student of Sergei N. Chernikov at Kyiv Pedagogical Institute (now National Pedagogical Dragomanov University). In October 1968, he defended his Ph.D. thesis “Groups with some systems of invariant subgroups” and became a junior https://doi.org/10.12958/adm1749 D Fedir Mykolayovych Lyman (22.02.1941 – 13.06.2020) researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine where he successfully worked up to August 1969. However, his family remained in Sumy, so Fedir Mykolayovych returned to Sumy, and on September 1, 1969 he began working at Sumy State Pedagogical Institute as a senior lecturer. In 1972 he became an Associate Professor of Mathematics, and in 1973 the Head of the Department of Mathematics. His career at his institution skyrockets intensively, thus, in 1994 he became a Full Professor, and in 2005 he was named a President of the Sumy State Pedagogical University. In September 1996, he defended his doctoral of sciences dissertation titled “Groups with restrictions on the normalizers of some systems of subgroups”. F. M. Lyman’s scientific findings were related to group theory and were associated with the study of groups in which normality and the normalizing condition were the defining restrictions. He fully described groups in which all non-cyclic, Abelian non-cyclic, decomposable subgroups are normal, as well as groups with the normalizing condition for some systems of non-cyclic subgroups. A number of his results have been devoted to the study of the properties of various Σ-norms of a group and its influence on the properties of a group. His publications on group theory consists of two monographs and about 100 journal articles. F. M. Lyman successfully combined scientific activity with organiza- tional and pedagogical work. He was a talented teacher and mentor. His pedagogical talent, love to mathematics, tact, sense of humor and ability to present complex material simply, succinctly and clearly, without lost of rigor, distinguished him as a lecturer and aroused sincere admiration and respect from students and colleagues. Among the thousands of his university students, mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists graduates of Makarenko Sumy State Pedagogical University, one can count of 5 D.Sc.’s and more than 30 Ph.D.’s. Two Ph.D. theses on group theory were defended under his supervision. His educational and methodical publications include manuals math- ematics, mathematical logic, numerical systems, higher algebra. They gained well-deserved popularity among students and instructors of many universities in Ukraine. F. M. Lyman’s achievements as an organizer and popularizer of sci- ence are no less important. On his initiative, in 1982, the Department of Mathematics of Sumy State Pedagogical Institute was host the VIII National Symposium on Group Theory, and in 2001—the III International Algebraic Conference in Ukraine. Fedir Mykolayovych was a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal “Physical and Mathematical Fedir Mykolayovych Lyman (22.02.1941 – 13.06.2020) E Education”, a member of the editorial committees of a number of interna- tional conferences. He actively worked with his disciples and students. For 20 years he was the chairman and a member of the jury of the student mathematical Olympiads. His accomplishments were recognized by the public and government, among others he was awarded by the honorary title “Honored Educator of Ukraine”. We express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of Fedir Mykolayovych, to the faculty and staff of Makarenko Sumy State Pedagogical University. The bright memory of this outstanding scientist and great person will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him and had the honor to work with him. O. D. Artemovych, V. M. Bondarenko, M. G.
