L’étude de pratiques rurales, passées ou résiduelles, a été progressivement relayée par l’analyse de situations vives qui n’ont plus pour cadre la petite communauté villageoise. Celle évolution tâtonnante et multiforme, conjointe à des changements théoriques qui ont affecté l’ensemble de la discipline, a entraîné un éclatement des méthodes et des paradigmes. Après avoir rendu compte des récentes métamorphoses des intérêts disciplinaires, on s’attache à mettre en évidence la diversité des points de vue appliqués à ces nouveaux objets; ceuxVci sont appréhendés, selon les cas, de loin, de biais, de près, cette dernière posture demeurant la plus fréquente. Les travaux contemporains font, par ailleurs, souvent la part belle à la subjectivité et à la parole des acteurs — ce qui constitue une indéniable avancée méthodologique mais amène trop fréquemment à négliger l’observation des comportements et les propriétés des objets étudiés. Pour rendre compte de la complexité et de la spécificité des phénomènes contemporains, on prône une ethnologie à échelles multiples, mettant en oeuvre un comparatisme raisonné. On évoque, enfin, les problèmes particuliers de méthode que pose l’abord d’un terrain proche. During past 25 years French ethnology has changed considerably. The study of past or residual rural practices has been progressively replaced by the analysis of presentVday situations which are no longer restricted to small village communities. This hesitant and multiform evolution, together with the theoretical changes which have affected the whole discipline, led to a scattering of methods and paradigms. After describing the recent transformations of the discipline subjects of interest, the diversity of viewpoints on these new subjects is put in evidence. They are apprehended, according to the case considered, either from a distance, sideways, or from close up, the latter case being most frequent. Moreover, contemporaneous works give a large place to the actors’ subjectivity and words — which undoable represents a methodological advance, but leads too often to neglect the observation of behaviors and the properties of the objects studied. The describtion of the complexity and specificity of contemporaneous phenomena, a multiscale ethnology involving a reasoned comparatism is recommended.
