Le substantialisme qui caractérisait la façon dont elles étaient abordées a abouti à une impasse théorique, la multiplication de définitions toutes également recevables signifiant au bout du compte l’impossibilité de les définir objectivement. Ceci a amené des auteurs comme Barth et Gellner à renouveler totalement l’approche de l’ethnicité et du fait national, et celle des rapports de l’une et de l’autre avec la culture, tandis que Benedict Anderson coupait le cordon ombilical rattachant conceptuellement la nation à l’ethnie. Ces clarifications théoriques devraient permettre à l’ethnologie française d’expliciter désormais sans gêne les problématiques d’une véritable ethnologie de la Frаnce. For a long time the ethnological reflection has joined together the notions of ethnic group and nation, the latter supposedly proceeding from the former, while being superior to it, since endowed with a political dimension. Substantialism, which characterized the way they were approached, led to a theoretical deadlock, the multiplication of definitions, all equally acceptable, signifying the impossibility of defining them objectively. This led authors such as Barth and Gellner to completely revise the approach of ethnicity and national fact and of their relation to culture, while Benedict Anderson cut the conceptual umbilical cord binding nation with ethnic group.
