У раду се настоји да се дефинишу слепачке песме као посебан жанр народног лирског песништва на основу три критеријума: (1) као вербални (и музички) део обичаја прошње, који има неке карактеристике ритуала (одређено место где се милостиња тражи, одређено време када се то чини, одређени облик понашања); (2) с обзиром на њихову функционалност и (3) у погледу њихових иманентних поетских карактеристика.
