Наукова новизна студії полягає у запровадженні до наукового обігу та систематизації нововиявлених документів із фондів Державного архіву Чернігівської області, що дозволяють відтворити драматичні обставини, в яких розпочався життєвий шлях майбутнього вченого. Висновки. Наведені та проаналізовані у статті відомості свідчать, що соціокультурне середовище й оточення М.М. Пікуса під час навчання в школі та Чернігівському інституті народної освіти, спілкування з місцевими істориками та архівістами справили визначальний вплив на формування його світогляду, інтересів та уподобань. Саме в цей час М.М. Пікус здобув, хоча й неофіційний, але досить серйозний науковий вишкіл у галузі історії України, зокрема завдяки активній участі в роботі Історико-архівного гуртка, який діяв під керівництвом викладачів Чернігівського інституту народної освіти на базі Чернігівського крайового історичного архіву. Зміна дослідницької траєкторії М.М. Пікуса, яка відбулася протягом 1930-х рр., була зумовлена життєвими обставинами, знищенням здобутків української історичної науки та репресіями проти наукової і творчої інтелігенції. Подальша науково-педагогічна діяльність М.М. Пікуса була пов’язана із закладами вищої освіти Іванова, Ярославля й Москви, де він сформувався як викладач і дослідник історії Стародавньої Греції та елліністичного Єгипту.
The purpose of the article is to clarify in detail the origins of the biography of the famous scientist and antiquarian M.M. Pikus (1907–1971), who was born and spent his childhood and youth in Chernihiv. The methodological basis of the study consists of the principles of historicism, objectivity and integrity, which are implemented using historical-biographical and historical-comparative methods. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the introduction into scientific circulation and systematization of newly discovered documents from the funds of the State Archive of Chernihiv Region, which allow us to recreate the dramatic circumstances in which the life path of the future scientist began. Conclusions. The information presented and analyzed in the article indicates that the socio-cultural environment and surroundings of M.M. Pikus’s studies at school and the Chernihiv Institute of Public Education, communication with local historians and archivists had a decisive influence on the formation of his worldview, interests and preferences. It was at this time that M.M. Pikus received, albeit unofficial, but quite serious scientific training in the field of Ukrainian history, in particular through active participation in the work of the Historical and Archival Group, which operated under the leadership of teachers of the Chernihiv Institute of Public Education on the basis of the Chernihiv Regional Historical Archive. The change in the research trajectory of M.M. Pikus, which occurred in the 1930s, was due to life circumstances, the destruction of the achievements of Ukrainian historical science and repressions against the scientific and creative intelligentsia. Further scientific and pedagogical activity of M.M. Pikus was associated with higher education institutions in Ivanovo, Yaroslavl and Moscow, where he served as a teacher and researcher of the history of Ancient Greece and Hellenistic Egypt.
