Акцентовано увагу на обмеженості інформаційного потенціалу особових джерел. Зроблено висновок про необхідність верифікації джерел особового походження та їх зіставлення з метою відтворення різних аспектів повсякдення примусових робітників та їх подальших життєвих шляхів. Накреслено перспективи дослідження теми на основі наративних та інших джерел. The study of the problem of forced labor and the life paths of ostarbaiters («workers from the East») both in Ukraine as a whole and at the regional level began in the 1990s. This problem attracted the attention of local historians, journalists, and writers. Significant scientific and public interest in the history of former forced laborers actualizes the creation of general works based on the materials of the Sumy Region. In the comprehensive study of the problem of ostarbaiters, along with traditional sources, sources of personal origin – memoirs, diaries, autobiographies, letters, oral testimonies, photo documents – play a big role. The author of this article aims to analyze the peculiarities and informational potential of sources of personal origin of ostarbaiters from Sumy Oblast, to find out their scientific value, as well as to determine the prospects for research on the topic. Having analyzed the memoir sources of ostarbeiters from Sumy Oblast, we can single out the main recurring themes: childhood in a pre-war village, the beginning of the war and occupation, recruitment or forced deportation, forced labor in Germany, relations with other ostarbeiters and representatives of the enterprise administration, owners, survival strategies and resistance, familiarization with another culture, maintenance of gender and national identity, liberation, further life paths. Significant informational research potential is contained in the correspondence of ostarbaiters. Unlike memoirs, which were created much later than the described events, letters, as a rule, recorded current everyday life. They, as a rule, are devoid of ideological pathos or incriminating accusations against the German authorities, since, as noted above, the correspondence of forced laborers underwent several stages of verification. We drew attention to the differences in the content and style of letters written by women (the vast majority of them) from men’s messages. Women’s letters are emotional and detailed, men’s letters are more restrained and concise. The informational potential of narrative sources is determined by both the factual component and the emotional assessment of the authors (at the same time, the actors) of historical events and their own experience.
