The Galician-Volhynian and Suzdal chronicles narrate the Kiev prince Rurikʼs campaign to Halych, leading some scholars to assume that the complicated relations between texts reveal the borrowing of information from one chronicler to another. From their point of view, the entire «war account» was written by a late Volhynian author under the influence of northeastern samples and inserted into Galician narrative. The purpose of the publication is to determine the origin of the texts. The methodological basis is the theory of historical narrative and textual criticism. Research methods include the analysis of historical narratives as well as text critical analysis. The novelty of the study: for the first time, the language preferences in fragments under question have been analyzed; the correlation of the Galician-Volhynian and Suzdal versions has been scrutinized and reinterpreted. Conclusions. With a high probability, the Galician and Suzdal chroniclers obtained information on the campaign from the opposite sides of the military conflict and their versions are independent narrations on the same event with no impact on each other. All fragments at the beginning of the Galician-Volhynian chronicle have peculiar grammatical features and lexical preferences. Taking into account new data, the assumption about the Volhynian editor is incorrect, since the account about Rurikʼs campaign and internal affairs in Halych was written by the same author of Galician origin. Attempts to break the connection between the parts of a coherent story run against Old Russian grammar and lead to a distortion of the meaning of the chronicle.
