Визначено, що де Ту, в залежності від наявних джерел та контексту, створив два протилежних образи українського козацтва: козаків-розбійників і козаків-лицарів. In the article it has been maid the first attempt in historiography to analyse those fragments of French historian J.-O. de Thou’s (1553-1617) work “Histoire universelle son temps” (1581-1617), which concern to character of Ukrainian Cossacks and its activity as well as to comparison the Cossacks with another military corporations existed at border between Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe.
