In the article it has been maid the first attempt in historiography to analyse those fragments of French historian J.-O. de Thou’s (1553-1617) work “Histoire universelle son temps” (1581-1617), which concern to character of Ukrainian Cossacks and its activity as well as to comparison the Cossacks with another military corporations existed at border between Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe. It was determined that according to his sources or to context of his book J.-O de Thou had made two opposite images of Ukrainian Cossacks which were following: “robbers” and "knights".
