HISTORY OF THE US NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN PUBLICATIONS
BY AMERICAN AUTHORS
The article contains a historiographical survey of the publications by
American authors on history and practices of the US National Archives,
Presidential libraries, federal document centers, National Historical Publica-
tions and Records Commission, US Federal Register, Electronic Records
Archives (ERA). In the author’s opinion, the publications in question are,
primarily, a massive and significant source base for further research of history,
practices and role of the US National Archives with regard to preservation of
historical documentary heritage. The publication will serve as a useful resource
for Ukrainian faculty members, students, researchers, anyone interested in
history of the US archives, history and archival affairs.

WLADYSLAW DOMINIK ZASLAWSKI (1616–1656):
MAGNATE, POLITICIAN, COMMANDER
The article, based on a massive array of sources, deals with the life and
work of an outstanding and rich magnate of the 1st half of the 17th century in
Rich Pospolyta, the second Ostroh Ordynat, Polish nobleman of Ruthenian
stock Wladyslaw Dominik Zaslawski. It sheds light on his role and place in the
political and military life of the Polish-Lithuanian state in the 1630–1650s,
including the stormy events in Khmelnychchyna.

The article highlights the relations of two noted historians: M. Kostomarov
and D. Bahalii. Based on their epistolary heritage and memoirs, the publication
provides analysis of their scientific ties, with a considerable emphasis on
M. Kostomarov’s impact on D. Bahalii’s outlook formation and career deve-
lopment.

The article offers analysis of the Ukrainian original record sources on

Archives of Ancient Acts in Warsaw. The key emphasis is made on diplomatic

The article presents the study of the last period of silver deng coinage in
Crimean Ulus in the 1420s. It is a review of two reports delivered at the
Numismatic Readings of the Numismatics Department, the State Historical
Museum (Moscow, Russian Federation, 2013). In addition to criticism and
analysis of big theoretical and practical mistakes made by the reporters, the
publication contains new proven data.

«THE EXODUS» BOOK OF CHRONOGRAPHIC EDITION
(THE JUDAIC CHRONOGRAPH AND TRINITY PENTATEUCH)
The complete or so-called «chetii» translation of the Octateuch is dated,
apparently, by the early 10th century in Bulgaria. The manuscript is known to
have three versions. The article covers the characteristic features of the
chronographic version of the Exodus Book, which exists in five manuscripts of
the Judaic Chronograph and Trinity (Troitsky) Pentateuch. The given Exodus
version is a valuable source for a new initial translation and, thus, for essential
updating of numerous Bible quotations in Old Slavonic and Old Russian
translations.

The key emphasis is made on the trials in Lviv in the late 16th — mid 17th
centuries. The author makes an attempt at reconstructing perception and
awareness of the then petty bourgeoisie in terms of the distant past as certain
arguments to be pragmatically used in court.

The article offers an archeographic description of the Karamanli manuscript
from the fonds of the Institute of Manuscripts, the Vernadsky National Library
of Ukraine. The compiler of the manuscript Urum Ivan Kurkchu was a member
of the City Duma and court judge in Mariupol in 1830–1850. His «Notes»
provide details of his private and public life, family relations, his interest to
Karamanli religious literature, Urum folklore, folk medicine and Italian.

The article sheds light on dress accessories for carrying money by the
population of Volhynian voivodeship in the last quarter of the 16th century.
Based on the 1580 record books of the Lutsk Hrodsky Court, it offers a variety
of items for carrying money, their specific use by different social strata in
various economic and real-life situations.
