ВЕЛЬМИШАНОВНІ КОЛЕГИ!
Українське біохімічне товариство інформує, що 3–7 жовтня 2009 року в Ялті відбудеться чергова
міжнародна VII Парнасівська конференція, яку буде присвячено нагальним проблемам сучасної
біохімії та молекулярної біології. Організаторами Конференції є Українське біохімічне товариство
та Польське біохімічне товариство.
Планується, що під час роботи Конференції працюватимуть наукові секції за такою тематикою:
роль рецепторів та ефекторів у клітинній сигналізації;
біологія позаклітинного матриксу;
технології роботи з нуклеїновими кислотами;
молекулярна медицина;
досягнення у галузі біотехнології та біобезпеки.
Термін подання тез доповідей — 30 квітня 2009 року.

VII PARNAS CONFERENCE
on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Yalta, Crimea, Ukraine, October 3–7, 2009
Dear Colleagues!
On behalf of the Ukrainian and Polish Biochemical Societies it is my honour and pleasure to announce
that the 7th Parnas Conference on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is going to be held in Yalta,
Ukraine on October 3–7, 2009. We would like to invite you to attend this biannual International confer�
ence named after the famous biochemist Professor Yacub Parnas.
The main goal of the conference is to enhance collabora�
tion between European scientists particularly young ones
and to stimulate open and direct discussions on recent
breakthroughs and advances in Molecular Biology,
Biochemistry and Biotechnology. As usual the scientific
program will be a selection of plenary lectures, oral presen�
tations and poster sessions.
The Parnas Conference traditionally supports participa�
tion of talented young scientists. This is recognized by
decreasing in registration fee for participants under 35 and
awards for winning young scientists.
The Conference venue with 275 persons conference hall
is situated on the west coast of Yalta Bay, in the gorgeous
evergreen park — a monument of the landscape art

well as to Livadia Imperial Palace where Yalta Conference was held in 1945 among «Big Three». We hope
that the setting of the Parnas Conference at the Crimea seacoast encourages the exchange of creative
ideas and provides a great atmosphere for social events.

PARNAS BIOCHEMICAL CONFERENCES
In September 9, 1996, the 1st Parnas Biochemical Conference started its work in
Lviv (Ukraine).
Who was Jakub Oskar Parnas?
Professor Jakub Parnas was an outstanding biochemist in the field of enzymol�
ogy of carbohydrate metabolism (Embden�Meyerhof�Parnas pathway) and energy
generation at that metabolism. In Poland, he is considered to be a father of Polish
biochemistry.
Why the 1st Parnas conference was organized in Lviv?
Since Prof. Jacub Parnas was born in Western Ukraine and worked for a long
time (1920–1941) in Lviv, well known as a big cultural and scientific center of
Ukraine, it is reasonable to consider him as one of the founders of the Ukrainian bio�
chemistry, too. Before the 2nd world war, Lviv was a very multinational city, and
there were many Ukrainians among Parnas's students at Lviv University, as well as
among the co�workers of his research laboratory.
Brief History of Parnas conferences
1996 (Lviv, Ukraine) — The co�organizers of the 1st Parnas conference were: Prof. Rostyslav Stoika (from
the Ukrainian side) and Prof. Liliana Konarska, President of Polish Biochemical Society (from the Polish side).
That conference was the first official commemoration of Prof. Jakub Parnas who died in KGB prison in Moscow
in January 1949 though before the imprisonment he was elected to the USSR Academies of Sciences and of
Medical Sciences and was awarded with the most prestigious Soviet awards. At the closing ceremony of the con�
ference, Prof. R. Stoika suggested the Parnas conferences to become organized regularly, once in two years
alternatively in Ukraine and Poland. That idea was accepted, and it successfully works till now.
1998 (Gdansk, Poland) — The co�organizers of the 2nd Parnas conference were: Prof. Stefan Angielsky
(Poland) and Prof. Rostyslav Stoika (Ukraine). That conference coincided in time with the days of Ukrainian
culture in Poland that were organized in Gdansk. It showed to be really international, rather than bilateral sci�
entific conference, since many outstanding scientists from many countries of the world participated in that
conference.
2000 (Lviv, Ukraine) — The co�organizers of the 3rd Parnas conference were: Prof. Rostyslav Stoika
(Ukraine) and Prof. Jolanta Baranska, President of Polish Biochemical Society. The international traditions of
Parnas conferences were successfully continued at Parnas conference in Lviv.
2002 (Wroclaw, Poland) — The co�organizers of the 4th Parnas conference were: Зrof. Jolanta Baranska,
President of the Polish Biochemical Society and Prof. Serhyi Komisarenko, President of the Ukrainian
Biochemical Society.
2005 (Kyiv, Ukraine) — The co�organizers of the 5th Parnas conference were: Prof. Serhyi Komisarenko,
President of the Ukrainian Biochemical Society (Ukraine) and Prof. Jolanta Baranska, President of the Polish
Biochemical Society (Poland).
2007 (Cracow, Poland) — The co�organizers of the 6th Parnas conference were: Prof. Jolanta Baranska,
President of the Polish Biochemical Society and Prof. Serhyi Komisarenko, President of the Ukrainian
Biochemical Society.
2009 (Crimea, Ukraine) — The co�org anizers of the 7th Parnas conference are: Prof. Serhyi Komisarenko,
President of the Ukrainian Biochemical Society and Prof. Andzej Dzugaj, President of the Polish Biochemical
Society.
Parnas Biochemical Conferences showed to be not only an excellent opportunity to start new scientific col�
laborative projects between the Ukrainian and Polish biochemists, but also gain friends among. These confer�
ences also provide good chances for involving Ukrainian biochemists into the international scientific collabo�
ration, since the level of these conferences is increasing constantly. It should be stressed that scientific ideas
of Prof. Jakub Parnas have been developed at Parnas conferences according to achievements and tendency in
modern Biochemistry , since all conferences are focused at specific ideas of Cell Biochemistry, namely cell sig�
naling, communication, apoptosis, etc.
