ONCOLOGY. SELECTED LECTURES FOR STUDENTS
AND PHYSICIANS. EDITED BY V.F. CHEKHUN, ACADEMICIAN
OF NAS OF UKRAINE — КYIV, 2010. — 768 pp. (IN UKRAINIAN)
The manual represents a collection of lectures
written by the leading Ukrainian scientists engaged
in the field of cancer research. The book contains the
up-to-date information on the problems of both experi-
mental and clinical oncology. The historical aspects
pertaining to the formation of oncology as a branch
of science and the content of its major concepts and
definitions have been highlighted. The data on cancer
epidemiology and principles of tumor classifications
are presented. The cellular and molecular mechanisms
of chemical, viral, radiation and hormonal carcinogen-
esis are reviewed. The genetic and epigenetic mecha-
nisms of the malignant transformation and the role
of exogenous and endogenous factors are discussed.
The modern concepts of programmed cell death, an-
giogenesis and metastasizing are reviewed. Several
chapters deal with the problems of cancer immunology
and cancer stem cells. The major achievements in the
field of clinical application of the results of molecular
genetic studies in cancer diagnosis and treatment are
summarized. The key mechanisms of drug resistance
formation are reviewed. The aspects of individualiza-
tion of treatment and rehabilitation of cancer patients
as well as the problems of cancer prevention are also
dealt with. Each lecture contains the test questions and
provides the list of the recommended literature. The
book is intended for the physicians the students, post-
graduates and the lecturers of the medical colleges.
The manual is officially recommended as training
manual for the students of higher medical educational
institutions in Ukraine.
