Naşterea este un moment decisiv atât pentru existenţa copilului, pentru familie şi chiar pentru întreaga comunitate. Nou-născutul era considerat impur şi periculos, dar, în acelaşi timp, vulnerabil. Rolul moaşei este de o extrem de mare importanţă, fiind o persoană iniţiată şi un mediator care performează protecţia şi integrarea gesturilor şi a actelor şi care are capacitatea (mai ales în ultima perioadă) de a influenţa nou-născutul şi de a interpreta semnele naşterii (ziua, starea vremii, semnele corporale, plânsul copilului).
