Skirtingai nuo vyraujančios nuomonės apie lietuvių kilmės sąsajas tik su senųjų baltų kultūros raida, straipsnyje iškeliama hipotezė, kad yra pagrindo manyti, jog lietuvių ir baltų raidai turėjo didelės įtakos ir nežinomos kilmės substratinė kultūra, kurios palikimą rodo ryškūs lietuvių etninės muzikos skirtingumai.
