Straipsnyje nagrinėjami lietuvių liaudies austinių juostų ornamento formos pagrindiniai bruožai, ieškoma jų istorinių šaknų. Atsekamas jų tipologinis ryšys su seniausiu žinomu šio tipo geometriniu ornamentu Rytų Europoje – neolitinėje Senosios Europos civilizacijoje (ypač Tripoljės-Kukutenio (Ukraina-Rumunija) kultūroje).
