U istraživanju kulta i tradicije sv. Martina izranjaju mnogi kulturni činjenici koji pripadaju pretkršćanskim vremenima, njihovim ukotvljavanjem u kršćanstvo stvara se vrlo kompleksna i čvrsta cjelina kojoj s pravom možemo dati sve karakteristike mita te tako govoriti o martinskom mitu kao bitnoj sastavnici kršćanske mitologije uopće.
