Description
Summary:Polish theatre active on the territories that at the end of the 18th century were incorporated into Russia in the result of the partitions, was forced to compulsory dependence on alien authorities, remaining entangled in the current political situation. The initially correct relations with the Russian officials drastically deteriorated with the outbreak and suppression of the 1830–1831 Insurgence. The Russians tightened control of permanent theatres and strolling players, intensifying repressive actions. Polish actors, in turn, supported by Polish society, often shared the conviction of the national and patriotic mission of the theatre, aware of the impact of Polish words spoken on stage amidst the growing Russification of the country.
