The article deals with theoretic and methodological principles for research of national society state becoming into being in the transitional stage of transformational changes in Ukraine. A special attention is focused on the dichotomy of tradition / innovation as a fundamental factor of the formation of new subjectivity in the Ukrainian society, which has no analogue in the history of Ukraine. The author analyses functional peculiarities of action and interaction as well as forms of traditionalism and innovations in mental structures of society, emphasizes the role of Ukrainian language as a material and spiritual keeper of historical tradition of the Ukrainian folk and national symbol, and, finally, compares to what extent the types of personality called as “traditionalist” and “innovator” in Ukraine and other European countries have spread.
