Языковая ситуация в Сингапуре

В данной статье рассмотрены и систематизированы причины распространения
 английского языка в государстве Сингапур. Изучены некоторые социально-экономические и
 политические предпосылки формирования нынешней языковой ситуации в государстве Сингапур.
 Английский язык в Сингапуре по-разному классифицируется учеными в современном языкознании.
 Особенное внимание в статье уделено рассмотрению научного определения и классификации языковой
 ситуации как одного из ключевых понятий социолингвистики, ее компонентов, а также обзору
 основных подходов к обозначенной проблеме. В работе подчеркивается, что национальные варианты
 языка в целом, и Сингапурский вариант английского языка (СВАЯ) в частности, являются
 самодостаточным, независимым объектом для всестороннего исследования.

 Сингапур. Розглянуті деякі соціально-економічні і політичні передумови формування теперішньої мовної
 ситуації в державі Сингапур. Англійська мова в Сингапурі по-різному класифікується вченими в
 сучасному мовознавстві. Особлива увага в статті приділена розгляду наукового визначення і
 класифікації мовної ситуації як одного з ключових понять соціолінгвістики, її компонентів, а також
 огляду основних підходів до визначенної проблеми. В роботі підкреслюється, що національні варіанти в
 мови в цілому, і Сингапурський варіант англійської мови зокрема, є самодостатнім, незалежним
 об'єктом для комплексного дослідження.
 Ключові слова: соціолінгвістика, мовна ситуація, двомовність, Сингапур. This article is dedicated to the problem of the English language national varieties. The main stages of
 the development of the language national varieties theory are studied. The article represents the critical review
 of the main research approaches towards the given problem. It is underlined that in the context of
 sociolinguistics and ethnolinguistics the language national varieties are the self-existent and independent objects
 for the more detailed linguistic research. This following article is also devoted to the historical and social
 aspects of English varieties functions in post colonial countries. The key point is analyses of the linguistic
 situation in Singapore. The special attention is devoted to socio-historical exploration of the emergence and
 institutionalization of the Singapore English variety. The author presents a brief outline of the history of English
 in Singapore as well as an overview of language usage there. These background information gives an
 opportunity to analyze and examine the current linguistic situation and understand the ways in which Singapore
 English is currently evolving. This article devotes special attention to reviewing extra-linguistic factors, which
 the majority of scientists consider to be core elements in studying the formation of linguistic situation. The
 factors include: political, cultural and social-economic changes that a society undergoes during its historical
 development. No little significance has the fact that Singapore, a multilingual island nation in Southeast Asia,
 embraces an officially bilingual education policy. English is the medium of all content-area education from the
 start of schooling required as a single subject. Relying on the above-mentioned facts and taking into account
 multiethnic environment in Singapore, where three main ethnic groups exist, English is determined as an interethnic
 lingua franca used for communication with other ethnic groups because the first languages of most
 Singaporeans are Mandarin, Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Malay, and Tamil.
 Singaporean English can be classified into two groups: Singapore Standard English (SSE) and Singlish. This
 paper examined the roles of the two varieties of English from a sociolinguistic point of view, based on the
 statistic data conducted by the Department of Statistics of Ministry of Trade and Industry (Republic of
 Singapore). Social-group dialects of Singaporean English deserve special attention. It follows from the findings
 on language usage and language attitudes that SSE and Singlish are used for two different functions. SSE is used
 in formal situations as the H variety, whereas Singlish is used in informal situations as the L variety. Taking into
 consideration all of the above-mentioned factors scientists define the following peculiarities of current language
 situation in Singapore: bilingualism, three social-group dialects of Singapore English and tendency among
 Singaporean population to utilize English as basic language in official situations.
