В ней рассматриваются основные черты Estuary English, вызванные влиянием диалекта кокни. Однако, Estuary English имеет также некоторые отличия в грамматике и лексике, что порождает непрекращающиеся споры относительно его лингвистического статуса. Очевидно, что в изучении Estuary English центральным является понятие континуума. Другой спорный вопрос, связанный с исследованием Estuary English, – область, на которую он распространился, что вызывает необходимость уточнения данного термина. Ключевые слова: Estuary English, диалект кокни, RP, языковой континуум.
Стаття присвячена опису фонетичних трансформацій у сучасній англійській мові Великої Британії, відомих як Estuary English. У неї розглядаються основні риси Estuary English, спричинені впливом діалекту кокні. Проте, Estuary English має також деякі відмінності у граматиці і лексиці, що породжує дискусії стосовно його лінгвістичного статусу. Очевидно, що у вивченні Estuary English центральним є поняття континууму. Інше суперечливе питання, пов’язане з Estuary English, – зона, на яку він поширився, що викликає потребу уточнення дефініції цього терміну. Ключові слова: Estuary English, діалект кокні, RP, мовний континуум.
Тhe article is dedicated to the description of phonetic transformations in the modern English language of Great Britain known as Estuary English. It deals with the main features of Estuary English that in many aspects are caused by Cockney influence. However, Estuary English also reveals some vocabulary and grammar differences, which gives rise to a continuous debate as to its linguistic status. Some scholars, like D. Crystal, regard it as a social dialect; others think it to be a variant of pronunciation that is replacing RP. Anyway, it is assumed that it is the notion of a continuum that is significant in the study of Estuary English. Another contentious issue concerning Estuary English is the area to which it has spread. Today it seems that Estuary English has taken over most of England and it even left some traces in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Moreover, since its introduction in 1984 there is no unanimous acclaim of the term “Estuary English” among scholars. On the one hand, it does not correspond to the area of its spread, (it is even not clear where exactly this variant o pronunciation originated). On the other hand, many argue that Estuary English is merely a new name, but not a new phenomenon. It is suggested that it should be regarded as a modification of RP. Similarity with Cockney leads to a negative attitude towards Estuary English. Some believe that it is destroying the British society, the spirit of Great Britain, “Britishness” itself. Nevertheless, there is an opinion that Estuary English is a phenomenon caused by democratic changes that take place in the society. It reflects the increasing tolerance of the British to homosexualism, their support for gender and racial equality. Key words: Estuary English, Cockney dialect, RP, language continuum.
