проблема эволюции персонажей. В круг рассматриваемых проблем входят вопросы возникновения
театра теней в Греции, связь его с греческим национально-освободительным движением и влияния
разных его аспектов на греческую культуру последних двух столетий
the article «The Greek Shadow Theatre of Karagiozis» by Alexandrova O.N. highlights evolution of
the shadow theatre in Greece in the context of the Modern European and Greek literature development.
Particularly, parallels with the ancient theatre are found, and the problem of personages’ evolution is touched
upon. The problems considered, include issues of the rise of the shadow theatre in Greece, its connection with
the National Liberation movement and the impact of its aspects on the Greek culture of the last two centuries.
The Greek theatre of Karagiozis( translated from Turkish literary as “black eye” ) is the oldest among the
existed ones in the country. Due to its political focus the shadow theatre began to play a very important role in
the life of the Greek people in the years of the National Liberation Movement preparation. The plays’ plots were
simple and comprehensible for people of all social layers and education. Historical personalities became most
favorite characters of the theatre. Political jokes of Karagiozis were aimed at the Ottoman administration, local
government, fully dependent of the Sultan’s will, and at Turkish soldiers. The public Greek shadow theatre used
colloquial language – demotic. The shadow theatre of Karagiozis lost its political lust at the beginning of the
20th century and has been perceived as theatre for children ever since. As Karagiozis had become the favorite
children’s character of TV programs, popularity of the shows with the beloved personage was revived.
