Статья Герасимюк М.И. и Александровой О.Н. посвящена актуальному на сегодняшний день жанру биографического романа и определению его значимости в творчестве Вашингтона Ирвинга (Washington Irving, 1783-1859). В исследовании анализируется авторское своеобразие биографического жанра в творчестве американского писателя, прослеживается его связь с историческим романом и эволюция на примере его известных биографических призведений. Стаття Герасимюк М.І. та Александрової О.М. присвячена актуальному на сьогоднішній день жанру біографічного роману і визначенню його значення у творчості В. Ірвінга (англ. Washington Irving; 3 квітня 1783 – 28 листопада 1859) .У дослідженні аналізується авторська своєрідність біографічного жанру у творчості американського письменника, простежується її зв'язок з історичним романом та еволюція на прикладі його відомих біографічних творів. The article by Gerasimyuk M.I. and Alexandrova O.N. is devoted to the genre of the biographical novel and its value in the works of Washington Irving (april 3, 1783 – november 28, 1859). The task in the article is to analyze the author's originality of the biographical genre in the works of the American writer, to observe its historical development and to identify its connection with the historical novel, the evolution and characteristics of this genre in the writer’s works, on the example of his famous biographical novels:»A History and Voyages of Christopher Columbus»; «History of Mahomet and his successors»; «Life of George Washington»; «Oliver Goldsmith». Scientific novelty of this research consists in more detailed study of the biographical novel in Irving's works. To solve the problems, the following methods have been used: сomparative method allowed to clarify specifics of the writer's novels and to identify the genre features of his work; biographical method allowed to find personal experiences and psychological transformation in the mind of the writer; theoretical analysis of the writer's works made it possible to observe the development of literature especially in the era of his work and determine its specific features; narrative and structural methods used to identify the underlying structure of biographical works.
