Рассматривается необходимость изучения перифраз в публицистическом стиле, поскольку
 они являются не только стилеобразующим элементом, но и выполняют различные функции в печатных
 изданиях, определяющиеся информативностью, экспрессивностью и суггеcтивностью. Розглядається необхідність вивчення перифраз в публіцистичному стилі, оскільки вони є не
 лише стилеобразующим елементом, але і виконують різні функції в газеті, що визначаються
 інформативністю, експресивністю і суггестивністю.Ключові слова: перифраза, публіцистичний стиль,
 метафора, метонімія, іронія, гіпербола, функція The necessity to study periphrasis in journalistic style is brought into light, because this very stylistic
 device is employed not only as a style forming element, but it also performs various functions in the newspaper.
 These functions of periphrasis are determined as informative, expressive and suggestive. Fresh images and the
 associations arising at the perception of periphrasis promote the disclosure of informative and influential
 functions of the newspaper to its fullest extent. Functioning of periphrasis in the journalistic style leads to the
 transformation of periphrasis into an independent unit of the language possessing such characteristic features
 as: allegorical meaning, descriptive characteristic, expressivity, novelty, estimation ability, written character
 and instability. It allows periphrasis to occupy one of the leading places among language means of the
 newspaper. It goes without saying that periphrasis is now treated as an integral phenomenon of newspaper
 language, a tool for creating additional expressiveness to the utterance. Moreover it generates either positive or
 negative attitude of the readers to the reported material. Instability, novelty and ability to reflect author's
 perception of reality and to influence consciousness of the readers have become a basis of expressive nature of
 periphrasis. No wonder that such a stylistic device attracts the attention of linguists throughout the world.
