Феномен Великої депресії у США є одним з ключових концептів у літературному спадку Уільяма Сарояна та Шервуда Андерсона. Він знаходить відображення у детермінуванні тематики коротких оповідань Сарояна та Андерсона. У статті виокремлено характерні риси американської літератури періоду Великої депресії. Досліджена тема Великої депресії як трагедії американського народу в художніх творах Сарояна та Андерсона.
The article is devoted to the research of the influence of the Great depression on the development of the literary process in the USA. The purpose of this article is to analyze the theme of the Great depression as a tragedy of American people in William Saroyan’s and Sherwood Anderson’s literary heritage. The article proposes a literary outline of Saroyan’s and Anderson’s creative work in the period of the Great depression and a research of the problems of their works. On the basis of the analyzed material it can be ascertained that the phenomenon of the Great depression in the USA is one of the key concepts of Saroyan’s and Anderson’s literary heritage. It predetermines the subject-matter of Saroyan’s and Anderson’s short stories. The article allots characteristic features of American literature the period of the Great depression evoked by the deep political, economical, cultural and social crisis. There is the investigation of the theme of the Great depression as a tragedy of American people in Saroyan’s and Anderson’s creative works. Their short stories are permeated with the motives of solitude and poverty, alienation of a personality, disappointment and devastation, tragic perception of life, crash of free America. Woe, suffering and anger which seized American people become the crucial leitmotivs of Saroyan’s and Anderson’s literary heritage. The complex analysis of Saroyan’s and Anderson’s creative work proves that the application of the theme of the Great depression facilitated the representation of the objective picture of reality and the reflection of the moods of American society
