On the example of the highest self-governing scientific organization of Ukraine — the National Academy of Sciences, the gradual change in the attitude of the top leaders of the state towards science and scientists is traced, and thoughts regarding possible measures to restore the level of scientific research are given. У статті автор робить спробу, не користуючись «рожевими окулярами», відверто оцінити вірогідні причини ситуації, в якій опинилася науково-освітня сфера України в останні десятиліття. На прикладі вищої наукової самоврядної організації України — Національної академії наук простежено поступову зміну ставлення вищих керівників держави до науки і науковців та наведено міркування щодо можливих заходів з відновлення рівня наукових досліджень.
