The Kyiv population of this species had some discrepancies with the diagnosis (Krammer, 2002) of cell size and coarse structure, which brought it closer to C. tumida (Bréb.) Van Heurck. However, the outlines of the sash clearly separated the Kyiv population of C. australica from C. tumida. It is proposed to expand the diagnosis of C. australica and to consider cell outlines as the only discriminatory feature between C. australica and C. tumida. При вивченні альгофлори м. Києва у деяких заплавних водоймах було знайдено діатомею Cymbella australica. Київська популяція цього виду мала певні розбіжності з діагнозом (Krammer, 2002) щодо розміру клітин та грубості тонкої структури, які зближували її з C. tumida (Bréb.) Van Heurck. Проте обриси стулок чітко відокрем-лювали київську популяцію C. australica від C. tumida. Запропоновано розширити діагноз C. australica та вважати обриси клітини єдиною дискримінаційною ознакою між C. australica та C. tumida. M.G.
