Києва у деяких заплавних водоймах було знайдено діатомею Cymbella australica. Київська популяція цього виду мала певні розбіжності з діагнозом (Krammer, 2002) щодо розміру клітин та грубості тонкої структури, які зближували її з C. tumida (Bréb.) Van Heurck. Проте обриси стулок чітко відокрем-лювали київську популяцію C. australica від C. tumida. Запропоновано розширити діагноз C. australica та вважати обриси клітини єдиною дискримінаційною ознакою між C. australica та C. tumida. M.G.
