The article defines the economic preconditions of updating and implementing of the Donetsk region strategy development for the period till 2020. Provided a brief characterization of the region, the tendencies of socio-economic development of the region, identified the current problems, defined the mechanism of strategic goals and milestones realization, and defined the indicators (prognostic indicators) to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of regional strategy imple mentation.
