The goal was to cover the history of the establishment and description of the genus Chaenomeles and consider the formation of Ukrainian names of taxa associated with the genus. Methods. Analysis of literature sources. Results. The genus Chaenomeles was established by English botanist John Lindley in 1822. Swiss botanist Claude Weber, who was born in 1922 in France, during her work in the United States monographically processed the genus Chaenomeles, unraveled the history of the introduction of three natural species of East Asian origin and identified four hybrid groups providing them with scientific diagnoses. Conclusions. The generic name Chaenomeles in Ukrainian is more expedient to render as Japanese quince. In horticulture, the name crop coincides with the name of genus in Ukrainian. Species epithets must correspond to the Latin original, be unified and unambiguous, with a deviation from the literal translation to prevent tautonymy. The Chaenomeles consists of natural species and hybrid groups: Ch. japonica, Ch. speciosa, Ch. cathayensis, Ch. ×superba, Ch. ×clarkiana, Ch. ×vilmoriniana, and Ch. ×californica, and probably Ch. sinensis, and Ch. thibetica. Мета. За мету ставилося висвітлити історію встановлення й опису роду Chaenomeles Lindl. та розглянути практику формування українських назв таксонів, пов'язаних з цим родом. Методи. Аналіз літературних джерел. Результати. Рід Chaenomeles було встановлено англійським ботаніком Джоном Ліндлі (John Lindley) у 1822 році. Швейцарська ботанікиня Клод Вебер (Claude Weber), яка народилася в 1922 році у Франції, під час роботи в США монографічно обробила рід Chaenomeles, розплутала історію інтродукції трьох природних видів східноазійського походження та визначила чотири гібридні групи забезпечивши їх науковими діагнозами. Висновки. Родову назву Chaenomeles українською мовою доцільніше передавати як японська айва. У садівництві культура має назву, що збігається з родовою. Видові епітети повинні відповідати латинському оригіналу, бути уніфікованими й однозначними, з відхиленням від дослівного перекладу для запобігання тавтонімії. Рід Chaenomeles — японська айва, складається з природних видів і гібридних груп: Ch. japonica — японська айва справжня, Ch. speciosa — японська айва гарна, Ch. сathayensis — японська айва катайська, Ch. ×superba — японська айва чудова, Ch. ×clarkiana — японська айва Кларкова, Ch. ×vilmoriniana — японська айва Вільморенова, Ch. ×californica — японська айва каліфорнійська. Якщо Ch. sinensis включати до роду Chaenomeles, а Ch. thibetica вважати за окремий вид цього роду, то їх слід іменувати відповідно, японська айва китайська та японська айва тибетська.
