Summary:The interaction of hexamethyldisilazane with high disperse silica in pseudoliquid layer has been investigated by IR spectroscopy method. The chemical modification of totally hydrated silica with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) has been found to take place due to the reaction with free silanol groups only. Hydrogen-bonded silanol groups do not interact with HMDS molecules. When modifying hydrated silica with hexamethyldisilazane, a possibility should be taken into account of parallel reactions with physically adsorbed water molecules.
