Description
Summary:This study concerns the chemical oxidation of synthetic activated carbon with H2O2 and HNO3. The properties of surface functional oxygen-containing groups have been studied by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, and thermodesorption with IR and mass registration. The oxidation with hydrogen peroxide has been shown to occur under mild conditions and to result in formation of surface hydroxyl groups mostly whereas use of nitric acid provides an essential increase in the number of lactonic and carboxylic groups.
