Chemistry, Physics and Technology of Surface| Summary: | Silicas with various degree of substitution of trimethylsilyl groups for surface hydroxyls have been obtained by gas and liquid chemical modification of fumed silica with hexamethyldisilazane. It has been found that the degree of silica surface modification insignificantly influences on the effective viscosity of suspensions in vaseline oil but it changes the rheological behavior of the systems. Thixotropic behavior is observed for the initial silica but rheopexy properties of the systems appear with increasing degree of surface modification with trimethylsilyl groups. The effective viscosity in vaseline oil depends largely on the method of modification: for the samples obtained by liquid-phase method it is substantially lower than that for the samples obtained by the gas-phase method. |
